5 Best Video Games For PS1

PlayStation 1 N For Nerds

We all had our favourite gaming consoles growing up, N64, any of the Sega systems and of course Atari (for some reason). But for my money, or should I say my parent’s money, you couldn’t beat the original PlayStation, it had it all, amazing 3D graphics, a CD player so you could listen to your Spice Girls CD’s and to top it off, it had the best library of video games of that generation. Dozens of games spring to mind, but let’s keep it to a nice round (not to mention easy to write) five, here are the Top Five PlayStation 1 Games.

5. Resident Evil

The original Resident Evil may not have been the first horror game to come out, but it was arguably the best up until that point, and given that it has been re-released and remastered so many times, it was clearly doing something right. It had a great story filled with memorable characters, thrilling action, awesome puzzles all set in a terrifically terrifying mansion. And I for one am not ashamed to say it was the first video game to make me scream like a little girl.RE1 Dogs N For Nerds

4. Crash Bandicoot: Warped

The Crash Bandicoot games were the birth of platforming in 3D, well, 3D that worked anyway and while Crash Bandicoot: Warped may have been the third game it was (at least for me) the best in the series. I mean sure in the first game you could ride a warthog, and the 2nd had a polar bear you could enslave, but the third had you riding a motorcycle, flying a plane and it gave you new powers and a fuck off bazooka to wipe out your foes.Crash Bandicoot N For Nerds

3. Tomb Raider

I may take a hit to my gamer cred for admitting this, but I have to come clean, I never beat the original Tomb Raider growing up, I’m sorry, it’s true. I just couldn’t for the life of me get my childish hands to perform the carefully timed actions necessary to keep Lara alive, never mind progress the story to the end. But Tomb Raider makes this list because despite how awful I was at avoiding the traps or how useless I was at solving the puzzles, it was still a great game. It had a variety of unique enemies that each required a different strategy to take down, shoot the men and wolves, and run and cry when you see the fucking T-Rex! Not to mention it birthed a series so iconic that other games have been trying to emulate it ever since.

2. Metal Gear Solid

Ah Metal Gear Solid, my 2nd favourite PlayStation One game (that’s not made by Square Enix) and a game that sits in my personal top 10 video games of all time. I credit this game with making me fall in love with games, and I don’t say that lightly, while Final Fantasy VII may be my favourite game ever I didn’t play it until after Metal Gear. It was Metal Gear Solid that showed me that video games could be more than jumping on boxes, collecting rings or beating the crap out of enemies, that a well written narrative could be woven into games and that choices have consequences.Metal Gear Solid N For Nerds

1.  Final Fantasy VII

I have gushed on and on about my love of this series before and I have prattled endlessly about how Final Fantasy VII is my favourite game of all time, and while every once in a while, (rarely mind you) a game comes along that threatens to usurp that position it never happens. And that is because Final Fantasy VII is the best game ever, simple as that, it has it all, amazing characters that are well crafted and have genuine flaws and personalities, an amazing story that you can replay countless times (trust me I know) and never feel bored, a massive world to explore that is filled with unique people and enemies, and some of the most iconic music in video games.

Typical nerd. Love comic books, video games and movies. My all-time favourite video games are the Final Fantasy series, my favourite Superhero is Superman but I prefer Marvel Comics. Controversial? I don't care!
