Today is the day when some people celebrate the resurrection of a messianic figure, but for most people it is an excuse to eat chocolate for breakfast without the world judging us. Yes it is Easter and that means Easter Eggs, but if you’re like me (and of course you are because we are in the midst of a global Pandemic) you’re trapped in doors with a laughably low supply of Easter chocolate. So if we can’t have the delicious chocolaty kind, let’s talk about the video game kind. Here are the Top 5 Easter Eggs In Video Games.
Assassin’s Creed 3 – Turkey assassin
I think we can all agree that Assassin’s Creed 3 was the low point for the series and while it has its fans it simply lacked the architectural splendour and wonderful stories of the previous instalments. But what it lacks in historical monuments to desecrate and crusaders to stab, it makes up for with one of the funniest Easter eggs in video games. Go up to a turkey at The Homestead, buy it dinner and punch in the legendary Konami Code ( up up down down left right left right B A) and your feathered friend will join your cause by donning an assassins cloak and hood. Unfortunately he doesn’t get a tiny hidden blade, but just add that to the list of disappointments that accompany game.
(“Let’s hope they don’t detect…fowl play!”)
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings – Altair Dead
And speaking of previous Assassin’s Creed games (see I can do segues), did you know that you can find Altair in “The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings”? Except when you find him it appears that he pushed his luck one too many times with the whole “leap of faith” thing because when you find him he’s a bit…dead. Yup, early in the prologue in “La Valette’s castle” you’ll find Altair dead from what appears to be a botched attempt at landing in a hay bale from a great height.
(“Requiescat in pace…dumb-ass!”)
Fallout New Vegas – Indiana Jones
Who remembers Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? Me neither, but apparently it was an Indiana Jones movie around 2008 that was so bad that the world has collectively agreed to mental repress it. But apparently the guys at Obsidian didn’t get the memo and decided that including an Easter egg immortalising a ludicrously idiotic scene from it was just what their game needed. If you activate the “Wild Wasteland” trait at the beginning of the game and venture past Goodsprings you will find this fedora wearing idiot dead in his fridge because he thought it would protect him from a nuclear explosion!
(This does not belong in a museum!)
Doom 2 – Kill John Romero
Everyone knows John Romero, oh sorry. I should say everyone knows “who” John Romero is, because only we know him, personally and have spoken with him, have his number and are invited to his house for dinner because we are best friends. But for the rest of you “non-friends”, he is the godfather of fps (check out our interview here) and isn’t afraid to make himself the subject of mockery. In Doom 2, after nailing the final boss in the mush with a rocket-launcher, if you enter the “no-clip” cheat code and Walk through the hole in the boss’s head, you’ll be ushered into a room. Here you’ll find John Romero, or at least his head, he spouts some gibberish that if reversed says “To win the game, you must kill me, John Romero.” And being the well-adjusted person you are, of course you willingly oblige.
(“Oh God…I just want to scratch my nose!”)
Skyrim – Star wars
I’m going to assume that you have all played Skyrim because by now it has been released for every gaming console, PC and tablet device known to man. But it would be silly to think that you have completed all the quests and unlocked all the secrets, unless you’re Korean or my brother. One of the secrets hidden within this gargantuan behemoth of a game is a clever nod to another beloved nerd staple, “Star Wars”. Located inside of “Bleakcoast Cave”, after besting a Frost Troll, you will come across a skeleton suspended upside down in ice, with his sword inches from reach. If you’ve seen The Empire Strikes Back, this will be all too familiar as it is the exact situation Luke found himself in on Hoth.
(“This is some frozen bullshit!”) Well, those were Gerard’s choices for Top 5 Easter Eggs In Video Games, can you think of any that should’ve made the list or just disagree?
